Our History

William York GreenK.Y. Green of 29 Cambridge Street, is the latest in an unbroken line of companies which have served local people carrying out Funerals in and around Aylesbury for at least 200 years. The present firm of K.Y. Green moved to Cambridge Street in February 1939, to the premises built by “Harry” Green a few years before.

Mr Ray Cochrane, the present owner, is Great Grandson of Mr William York Green pictured alongside, who lived in Walton Street, between 1844 and 1912.

A few pictures are shown below of old Aylesbury scenes from the Company history.

In the second photograph of Walton Street (pictured below) the old County Offices are seen on the left and Cannon & Green Ltd from another angle are seen on the right. Click to enlarge: County Offices & Walton Street, AylesburyTheir sign can just be made out above the pedestrians.

It was Mr W.Y. Green’s grandfather Mr William Green (5 generations before Mr Cochrane) lived in Temple Street, Aylesbury between 1785 and 1870. He was recorded in Pigot’s County Guide of 1821, as Builders, Architect, Upholsterer, Undertaker and Toymaker! His advertisement appeared on the front page of the 1st edition of the Bucks Herald in 1832.

Further photos can be found at the bottom of this page from the company archive.  Please scroll down for a brief family tree of the Greens.
